With the summer months coming to an end, now is the best time of year to redesign your patio. That way, you can spend more time soaking up that precious sunshine. And there's no need to think that luxurious patios only belong in the suburbs. Even your city condo with a small patio can be transformed into an urban oasis.

We here at homify have gathered together seven design ideas that will help your small patio look bigger and give it a little panache. We hope these ideas inspire you to make the most out of your small space!

1. A green canopy

You'd be amazed at how effectively plants change a patio. By hanging green and flowering plants above your patio, you create a more natural and airy atmosphere, adding depth and dimension to your space. Get creative and coordinate your flowering plants to match your cushions.

2. Green walls

When adding plants to your small patio, try to use as much vertical space as possible. Growing plants or placing accessories vertically and using them as walls gives you much more floor space. That means more space for tables and chairs for your guests.

If walls are an issue, a trellis is the solution. Take this image, for example. The trellis adds colour and texture to the limited space without making it look too busy. And the best thing about trellises is that its height will enhance your patio privacy.

If you're an apartment renter who may not have the space to install a trellis, consider getting hanging planters instead.

3. Hedge screens

Hedge screens are a wonderful way to make your patio look like an extension of your yard, and they also offer great privacy. For those of you that want something milder, Boxwood is a great option, as it's a low-lying plant.

4. Go vertical

Building up in your small garden is the most efficient way to save on space, but this doesn't just include plants. You can build up your accessories on your wall space.

From planters and lights to works of art or various knick-knacks, your space will benefit from having these things off the floor and on display, not just for space purposes, but for aesthetic reasons as well.

5. A tiered garden

Tiered gardens are fantastic for small spaces. If you only have minimal space for flowers or plants, you can create a tiered garden by stacking some terracotta planters.

You can plant whatever you want in them, which makes designing a breeze. It's also a good idea for annuals, especially if you want something colourful on the patio.

6. Layer it up

Layering is a nifty patio trick that lets you group and display your accessories for a larger-looking area. We just love how the small planters use the natural shape of the brick building by being stacked up on it.

7. Use thin garden furniture

This point is really quite simple. The thinner your garden furniture the more space you're able to utilize. And thinness doesn't mean unstylish. Just have a look at this small patio table and chair set. The thin materials of the set take up very little space, meaning there's more leg room for you and your guests.
