You should know by now that we love colours and we particularly love black and white interiors for their timelessness and sophistication. We have several great articles featuring these special interiors, but below we're laying out a plan for you to get your own monochromatic interior just right.

Kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, foyers – you name it, we've got it covered below. We've simplified this list so you can slowly (but succcessfully) transform any room in your home to a classic and modern monochromatic room full of high design. Grabbing the black and white paint is only the beginning, the tips and tricks below will have guests thinking you should be featured in the newest interior design and architecture magazine!

1. Black structural features

Structural features of a home would include baseboards, crown molding, exposed beams, pipes and wall features. If you make sure that a majority of your home is white, adding black to these structural details (like seen here) is a quick and easy way to add some black to your home without it being overpowering. This glass and black metal partitions is perfect and corresponds nicely with the black dining room set and curtains.

2. Black furnishings with a white interior

This home is truly bright white. With plenty of natural sunlight filtering in through the patio doors, black and not only great, but almost necessary here in order to balance out the whiteness. It's great to make accent tables and coffe tables black, but why not add a black door for a large pop of darkness?

3. Classic black-and-white chequered flooring

Retro-inspired chequered flooring is a great way to use black and white colour trends in your home. Especially great in utilitarian areas like kitchens, bathrooms and foyers, black and white is great at disguising messes and tiles are a great choice for a low maintenance alternative. Both small and large chequered squares are available and should be chosen carefully depending on the size of your room. Below, we will show you a smaller black and white chequered pattern.

4. Black and white details

Check out the smaller black and white chequered tiles here, where white is the dominant colour. Below is yet another example where the black and white colours hold a more equal stance. However, we're focusing on the design details in this photo. This black, wrought iron staircase is perfectly complimented by the black and white flooring and white interior. The small feature wall with typography behind the stairs is a great way to add some more greys and other neutral colours.

5. Mixed materials

Want black and white for your home or flooring but not sure what other materials go well with it? Well, glass and dark-stained wood are two great starters. As seen here in this detail photo, the threee materials and colours mixed together make for a modern, yet rustic environment. Choose this combination for bathrooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Why not try a black and white, monochromatic kitchen with some great, rustic wood worktops?

6. Use reflective surfaces

A lot of homeowners turn away from black and white or monochromatic interiors because of their fear of darkening a space or making it too bland. The key to overcoming this fear is to use appropriate accessorising details and decor that will add a unique mix to your otherwise, simple palette. Reflective surfaces – mirrors, metals and glass – will make all the difference, we promise. Check out the reflective decor in this example, the bowls and the four small pendant lights.

Try a black and white palette – it's easy to accomplish and one of the most timeless colour palettes you can choose. These two colours were born for each other and their relationship is one that spans the decades!
