We've all either been in them, or have had them from time to time: Smalll spaces. Sometimes it seems even if the rest of the home has large, ample space, there's always that one room that feel too cluttered, too cramped and too small. Instead of scratching your head wondering what to do with these spaces, we've provided you with some great, simple tips below to make these small spaces seem less claustrophobic.

From painting with neutrals, to opening windows with no window shades and using smal, multifunctional furnishings to your advantage – we have it all covered below! So stop dreading your small, claustrophobic spaces and put them to good use!

1. Work with height, not width

Want to know where to place that home office you've always dreamed of? But only have small, cramped spaces to do it in? In homes with odd, extra space like the one see here, work with the height to give you what you need, not the width.

2. Multifunctional equipment/furnishings

By purchasing multifunctional addions, applications and widgets to your home, you can quickly create space when you need it, and dispose of it when you're done, allowing the space to return back to looking bigger.

3. Paint the ceiling white

In bedrooms or utility rooms where you have angled odd, angled spaces, paint the ceiling white like these professionals did and you'll instantly have a space that looks larger, warmer and more inviting.

4. Keep windows clean and skip curtains

We love curtains, shades and sheers as much as any other designer, however, in smaller bedrooms it's okay to forego window coverings and let all the natural light you possibly can seep in.

5. Optical illusions with strategic paint application

This hallway is narrow and cramped – it also has a lot of furnishings and art included in such a small space. However, with the right application of multiple, complimentary paint colours, the space opens up upon sight and becomes a cool, sophisticated space.

6. Use glass for partitions, not plaster

Partitions are naturally a part of almost any home, unless you have an open-concept loft. But in normal situations where you're trying to create separate living spaces, use glass, not plaster or drywall in order to allow the room to keep its size.

7. Use smaller-scale, lower furnishings

Here, we have another odd, angled space – and once again it's a bedroom. By keeping furnishings on the smaller side and positioning them low to the ground, this bedroom looks huge.

8. Decorate with soft neutrals

Small cottage-style homes are welcoming, cosy and inviting. This space has a lot going on in its small dimensions, however, the use of neutral colours with natural elements doesn't make you feel too cramped or cluttered upon entering.
