Feng shui is an ancient practice used to promote wellness. It involves the mindful use of colour and the strategic arrangement of furnishings to create harmony within a given space. This is especially important in the kitchen. Having food to prepare in the kitchen and enough to share with others is a call to celebrate prosperity, abundance, and joy. Since the beginning of history, the hearth is an important gathering space linked to nourishment and communal interaction among family, friends, and neighbours. As a result, the kitchen itself is regarded as a source of wellbeing, within Feng Shui philosophy just as significant as the nourishing food that’s prepared there. Feng Shui aims to create a kitchen with energy flow to promote a sense of welcoming and hospitality there. In this Ideabook, we will be discussing the fundamental elements of making your kitchen Feng Shui.

Feng Shui basics

Before we get down to the specifics, we’d like to share a little more with you about the way Feng Shui works. For one, each room in the Feng Shui home has its own set of rules for the way furnishings ought to be arranged in relation to one another. Understanding the way that the flow of energy is affected by the way we arrange our furniture is important. Further, light plays a strong role in Feng Shui design, and it is important to know how to properly incorporate it into the Feng Shui interior. The kitchen is one of the 3 chis, or centres of energy, in Feng Shui home. The other two are the bedroom, and bathroom. The reason these rooms are seen is the principle concerns of the Feng Shui home is because these areas are about nourishment, regeneration, and disposal. Now lets examine some of the necessary elements of making your kitchen into the chi of nourishment.

The right direction

Like many basic architectural theories dictate, windows should ideally face south or east with particular emphasis toward on the eastern cardinal direction. This is important to Feng Shui design because natural light and the good energy it brings is a necessary element of a Feng Shui interior. In particular, having light in the hearth area at the start of the day is said to be auspicious. Further, east is said to be compatible with fire, which is naturally linked to the hearth of the home where food is prepared. Placing potted plants near the windows facing east will help to promote prosperity. Wooden windowpanes will work as a buffer to promote harmony and reduce conflict between the elements of water and fire, which are both present in the kitchen. You can almost feel the harmoniousness and good energy streaming in from the eastern facing windows in this kitchen!

Position sink

Now that we’ve established the importance of orienting the kitchen towards the east or southeast, particularly in regard to windows and doors, it’s time to consider how best to arrange the particular kitchen implements. As for the sink, it is a major purveyor of the element of water in your kitchen. Water is an important element in Feng Shui as it is generally one of the most powerful forces of nature. The regular flow of water through the sink in the kitchen also means that there’s a lot of energy entering this room. The best strategy for regulating that energy is by giving it an outlet. To do this, making sure your sink is located in front of a window to promote the quick drainage of energy. This kitchen is a great example of the fact that the window in a design by 목소리doesn’t have to be large to fit the tenets of a Feng Shui kitchen.

Position stove

Just as important to the placement of the sink in Feng Shui design is the placement of the stove. As the sink produces the energy-laden element of water, the stove creates fire. In Feng Shui fire is closely connected to feelings of passion, desire and joy. Still you don’t want this energy to get out of hand in the kitchen because excess fire energy can lead to aggression and confrontation in the inhabitants of your kitchen. To avoid unwanted family feuds, set up the stove in front of a solid wall with a reflective backsplash. Or, better yet, install a stove into your kitchen island. The main principle in either scenario is that the stove should be highly visible from as many angles in the kitchen as possible. Further, the stove should be arranged away from the water-producing sink, as water and fire are conflicting elements. If you can, orient the oven in any direction except to the north. And finally, promote healthy, positive energy by always making sure to keep the stove clean.

Earthy materials

Considering the strong elements of fire and water present in the kitchen, it is fitting that Feng Shui kitchen design is best done in earthy materials like granites, timber, or terra cotta tiling. Although black is permissible in surrounding areas, try to avoid this colour in your kitchen appliances, countertops and kitchen fronts. Black is associated with water and would lead to excess in this form of energy. Feng Shui is about balance as much as it is about light. This kitchen is a good example of how you can mix black while keeping the colour away from the immediate cooking areas. Plus, we can see the harmonious role natural light plays in the overall interior. You can also introduce pottery if you’d like to amp up your kitchen’s earthiness.

Celebrate freshness

Both freshness and active appreciation for it will elevate the overall harmony and positive chi in the kitchen. For starters, Feng Shui emphasises organisation, cleanliness, and the avoidance of excess. As for colours, in addition to earthy greens and browns incorporate yellows, gold, or other light colours residing within an earthen colour palette. Wash everything in golden sunlight to promote good energy as well. The presence of flowers and other plants can raise the chi in the kitchen and cleanse it of negative energies. This kitchen exemplifies the many ways to celebrate freshness. It is clean and energy flow is made possible in the absence of excess. The flowers add an element of harmony at the centre of the kitchen. The window dressings, timber floor, and adjoining dining furniture exude warm golden hues in the pleasant sunlight.
