Polycarbonate was destined to become one of the most important materials of contemporary architecture. But the real beginning of the commercial exploitation of polycarbonate would only occur around 1960. The use of polycarbonate has grown surprisingly because of their particular properties of transparency, thermal, and mechanical resistance. Also, it has excellent electrical features as well as rigidity.

Easily usable for molding, polycarbonate lends itself to the realization of very complex roofs and structures. The transparency and colorlessness of the material allow a permeability of 89% in the visible spectrum. Polycarbonate roofs readily absorb sun rays which can cause yellowing. To avoid this situation and shield the surface exposed atmospheric agents are often used.

The transparency of the polycarbonate roofs added to the mechanical properties of the material. That is what makes it the natural substitute for glass roofs. These polycarbonate roofs can now be used in the architecture of houses, especially for balconies and terraces. In this ideabook, you will be able to know some applications of this material.

1. On the balcony

The porch is a traditional field of application of polycarbonate roofs. It is a moldable and economical material par excellence. In the image above the realization of a large balcony attached to a country house is proposed. The excellent transparency of the polycarbonate cover emphasizes the expressive qualities of the materials and furniture inside the balcony.

2. Large spaces

The ability to cover large surfaces is an essential feature of polycarbonate, thanks to its low cost and ease of handling. The large polycarbonate covers can give life to bright and ventilated spaces. In this image, the large and luminous polycarbonate cover emphasizes the hanging vases in the structure, which suggestively bathes the green area.

3. In a gazebo

A light garden gazebo offers an excellent opportunity to take advantage of a polycarbonate cover. The model in the picture above associates with an iron structure and a white polycarbonate cover, which is perfect for protection against the sun and rain. The gazebo is entirely detachable and made-to-measure as it is equipped with a practical internal plumbing system for collecting rainwater.

4. On a terrace

The project of restructuring an apartment offers the possibility of observing the advantages of a polycarbonate cover associated with a wooden structure. The presence of three rather tall buildings in the surroundings required a sturdy polycarbonate paneling to avoid the unpleasant sensation of prying eyes. The combination of the lightness of the cover in polycarbonate with the solidity of the structure in wood is also appreciated.

5. Magic box

Here we see a full polycarbonate box on the roof of a terrace that extends from a contemporary workspace. The exteriors of the new architectural extension are inserted with personality in the patio of the old building. They are presented as two sheer volumes with walls and cover in polycarbonate and aluminum. Also, they are connected to each other by a green ceiling that, thanks to a wooden deck, can be used as a work and relaxation space.

6. Naked house

Here is an exciting application of polycarbonate in coverage, which exalts the expressive qualities and versatility of the material. In this project, a house with a wooden structure has been deconstructed, leaving its skeleton visible. It transforms into the polycarbonate and wood cover of a very high-ceilinged porch. The transparency of the polycarbonate contributes to highlight the structure of the wood, resulting in significant formal strength.

7. Color and light

A polycarbonate cover can also light up a facade with color or give an extra note to the space of a balcony or terrace. It is the case of this delicate cover in amber-colored polycarbonate that crowns a long terrace. The chromatic reflections of the polycarbonate cover vary according to the incidence of the sun, changing every hour of the day.

8. Refurbish with polycarbonate

This is the interior of an ordinary wooden hut, but things are not always as they seem. The polycarbonate, in this case, was applied to the roof and walls between the logs to isolate the cabin, making it usable for new functions. The project envisaged the placement of transparent and high-density polycarbonate horizontal strips between beams and logs.

9. With wood

The polycarbonate and wood covers unite the opposing qualities of the two materials. The roof of the above image has a structure in laminated wood in which is inserted a skylight in transparent polycarbonate that guarantees excellent luminosity to the interior of the house. Also, the composite assembly is accented by brick pillars.

10. A polycarbonate facade

The public building of the above image is characterized by two superimposed volumes that open to an inner area, capable of catalyzing natural light and urban life. The facade and the cover with colored polycarbonate make the building look bright. Also, they enrich it with subdued chromatic tones.
