In this thoughtful restoration, CCD chartered architects ensured that the historic English home retained its character. Le Pres de Bas exudes a grand heritage, complemented by carefully manicured gardens and wonderful outdoor spaces. The sympathetic and tasteful extensions to the house are testament to the architects efforts to maintain the original character of the home.

The new lean-to with adjoining patio areas asserts a distinct difference whilst also connecting seamlessly with the original structure – a feat that demonstrates a great design finesse. Approaching the home from one of the stone paths or across its lush grounds, one could easily imagine that the extension may have, in fact, been part of the original incarnation.

The original form

Here we see the home in its original form. The lovely lush garden sits in front of a long, two story stone wall, broken only by a series of white timber windows. Composed of stones, roughly cut and multi-coloured, they add intrigue to a simple and very linear design.

The materials, lines and size of the structure are, from this angle, imposing and sturdy. One may feel impressed rather than invited. In fact, at first glance it is a little difficult to locate the small entrance way door that barely distinguishes itself from the two windows either side.

The lean-to extension

The striking and delicate extension is well placed to utilise the wonderful grounds. The original structure posits a series of small, picturesque windows which allow light in and views out. However, this large conservatory space is dominated by glass. The two sets of French doors spill onto a paved social space which then leads onto the beautifully manicured lawn.

The extension employs the same shingle roofing that is found in the original structure. The contrast of the black shingles against the stark white facade is simple and stylistic.

The linear and the organic

This gently winding stone path wraps around the glass clad extensions and garden, leading toward the paved patio. Offsetting the vibrant green grass and lush growth in the garden, the shell coloured pebble path forms a moat of sorts around the house. The juxtaposition of the rectilinear and the slightly more organic forms of the garden acts to soften the grandeur of the home.

Outdoor dining

Here we see the wonderful outdoor social space; again, built from sturdy, classic materials. The quaint outdoor dining area, complete with a concrete formed grill and flue, is enclosed by a flower bed which is more uniform than the rest of the gardens. The use of stone and brick materials establishes a continuity with the rest of the home. For more outdoor living inspiration, take a look at these balconies, porches and terraces!

A step inside: the kitchen

And now for a final shot, we take a look inside at the equally impressive kitchen. Respecting the original form of the home both outside and in, this space is sympathetic to its former life. The extra ceiling height and exposed timber rafters enhance the feeling of spaciousness and achieve a classic country aesthetic. Were it not for a line of recessed lights along the ceiling, one may not glimpse any traces of modernity.
