Global warming and concern for environment force the conscious citizen to think about energy conservation and carbon footprints we are leaving behind while enjoying the cool AC air. For a normal person apart from the environment issues what concerns them the most is the electricity bill which is heavy enough to burn the hole in pockets. Today we have come up with simple yet amazing ideas to save on electricity cost and contribute your bit even if it just a small step for the larger cause, the environment. In the process you will also learn to live in more environment friendly ways. Have a look!

1. Open up the windows

A properly ventilated home is cooler due to the free flow of air through windows and doors. Proper ventilation means the doors or windows are on the opposite side of each other allowing the flow of breeze. Ventilating the home is especially effective in evenings when outdoor become cooler than indoor. Open up the windows and let the cool air sweep the home to carry away the warm air and feel the drop in temperature in a natural way. Switch off the AC and enjoy the cool evening breeze flowing through the space.

2. Cover up the windows

Drape the windows with thick curtain or Venetian blinds to block sunrays hitting your home to make it warm. You can opt for rattan blinds which are a natural material and eco-friendly too. You can also think of covering up the windows with curtains made up of khuskhus. It is a type of aromatic grass which can be weaved into curtains. Cover the windows with it and sprinkle water on it. When wet this khuskhus curtain acts as a natural cooler.

3. Switch to fans and coolers

With windows open and covered, now it’s time to switch off the AC and switch on fan or cooler. When running in full speed, a fan can reduce the inside temperature by almost 10 degree. Air cooler also cools the space by adding moisture into the environment at lower cost, but it is suitable for dry and arid climate and not in hot and humid atmosphere.

4. Use the open space

Instead of staying indoors just open the doors of the balcony and terrace, make a nice and comfortable space to sit. Now switch off the AC and enjoy your evenings with family and friends under the open sky embraced in greenery around.

5. Green all the way

Bring in the greenery outside as well as inside. The colour green is magical! It calms the soul and soothes the mind and when blooming all around it makes the atmosphere fresh and cool. In outside you can grow large shady trees like mango, jackfruits, wood apple, etc. Along with shades it also bears fruits in summers.
