Staying in a hotel can always be a nice treat – plush pillows, soft bedding and linens and cleanliness to the highest level.  Top that off with room service and free wifi – ah, perfection! Most of all, nothing beats hopping into a squeaky clean hotel shower, using the complimentary luxury toiletries, and wrapping up in a warm towel robe before a good night's sleep. When a hotel stay is this perfect, going back home can feel like a drag… but it doesn't have to be this way!

Hotel-style bathrooms are definitely one of the easiest interior design creations you can complete yourself, and in one, quick weekend. From your favourite scents, to fresh white towels and a grand bathtub big enough to fit five people – we've got you covered with advice, tips and tricks to complete the most successful bathroom makeover ever!  Check out our six key tips below, and by the end of the weekend your family will love your new bathroom!

White? Okay, but not for everything!

When imagining a hotel bathroom, you might think of the cleanliness and beautiful fixtures.  Yes, white is a great way to add clean and simple elements, but don't go too wild with it! As seen in this example, the white of the tub, sink and walls makes the use of colours elsewhere pop!  The raw wood under-cabinet and the beautiful marble floor become a stark contrast to the white elements of the room.

If you do choose to stick with a mostly white bathroom, consider bringing in colour with the storage spaces and the decorative elements- such as towels, flowers and the vanity. Bathrooms typically have strong lighting and brighter light fixtures, and the combination of all-white can give guests the feeling of being in a hospital – so it's best to change it up in your in-home, private bathroom!

Create a corner to relax

If you take the time to look around at the items that make a hotel bathroom a special type, you'll quickly realize that it's the combination of all the small details that add up to make it a scene of serenity.  Most of us don't think about adding seating or a corner to relax in our bathrooms – but once you decide to create one, you'll realize that it has many uses!

A corner to relax in can provide a place for clothing while you bathe, for spa items such as a loofah and candles, or simply a corner to sit in while you dry off and apply lotion after a nice, long shower.  Try this easy option to make your bathroom hotel-esque; all you need is a simple chair or small bench, wrapped in a throw or hotel-style towels and great lighting.  The bathroom pictured here has a built-in relaxation corner by using the stairs – which seem to give you access to both the great window view and the spa-style tub!

A tub is a must!

Taking a long, glorious bath is something we all crave every now and then – and unfortunately most of us feel that we don't have the time to take one.  A relaxing bath is good for both your mental and physical health and if you provide yourself the proper space to bathe, then there are greater chances that you will use it!

Even in cheaper motels and hotels, a bath is provided (and with those sample soaps and shampoos we all love to keep!) and for good reason – it makes their guests feel at home! Pick your bath wisely, make sure it fits your space requirements, and has a great style.  If you don't want a huge tub overtaking the look or feel of your smaller bathroom, then think abut stylish vintage and retro tubs like a claw-foot tub or a refurbished tub from a local vintage-home shop! What claw foot tubs don't provide in space, they definitely provide in looks – and they're typically extremely deep!

Flowers everywhere

Flowers add a special touch to almost any space in your home, they're relatively cheap and come in a variety of colours and styles – making it nearly impossible to not match any room you throw them into.

We understand that not a lot of homeowners go out and buy fresh flowers, mainly due to the fact that they die about after 1-2 weeks average and leave you feeling as though you constantly need to refill them.  However, fresh flowers bring a liveliness to homes unlike any other design element.  If you choose not to keep fresh flowers for yourself on a weekly basis, then think about purchasing fresh flowers for whenever you have guests arriving to add a special touch to your beautiful bathroom.

These homeowners went all out and installed a mini-garden area in their bathroom – check this out as an option for you too!

Tip: Buy flowers from a flower market where they're cut fresh daily and still rather young.  If you buy them when they're young and not yet blooming then you can get almost 2-3 weeks of blooming life out of them – just keep the water very fresh!

Use your favourite scents

Rather than being known as a space with weird smells, make your bathroom fresh 100% of the time.  You can do this multiple ways – so don't think this means plugging in a freshening filter or always buying flowers.  Below we will list several options to freshen up the smell of your bathroom:

1. Fragrant artisanal soaps & lotions

2. Your favourite candles

3. Fresh succulents and potted flowers that do well in steamy environments

4. And lastly, a plug-in air freshener

All of these options are great to consider and will depend on both the amount of money, or the amount of maintenance you're willing to put forward!

Use fancy lighting

Any space where you're cleaning yourself should be kept as clean as possible – you know that already. One way of keeping a bathroom clean and tidy is to provide yourself with sufficient light to perform such duties.  In any bathroom, and especially a hotel-style bathroom, we suggest at least one overhead light and another one or two lights above the sink or vanity. Of course, if you have a natural light source in your bathroom, keep that open as much as possible for a sense of freshness year-round.

Tip: Don't think that you always need super-bright fluorescent lights in a bathroom, this can make the space seem too stark – opt for multiple light sources with lower wattage to create a bright, yet cozy feel!
