We generally feel tranquil in horizontal spaces. They encourage us to gaze at the horizon and suggest a strong connection with the earth. Homes with strong horizontal layouts are particularly prevalent in tropical areas for this reason. Just think of the layout of any high-end beach resort…

This kind of strong horizontal layout can also be successfully applied to family homes. The one we will explore today is situated in sunny Mexico and presents as a broad, single level home. The living areas are spacious and it has an open, luxurious feel that might encourage one to wander around the grounds. The architect Romero De La Mora designed vast expanses of glass, lush garden surroundings and a plush, sophisticated decor. Come with us on a photo tour to explore more!

A private, modern facade

The contemporary facade has the same horizontal focus as the bright interior, but with a distinctly private feel. This is not a home built to impress others or to tower over its surroundings. It's a home built for family living and that means that privacy and interior life are all-important.

A sophisticated glass rear exterior

The rear exterior offers a much more open feel than the front facade. A series of large floor-to-ceiling glass windows cover every wall and promise a strong relationship with the lush flat garden. Contemporary blinds offer privacy when needed, but it's clear that this is a home to enjoy the broad outdoors.

A welcoming garden entrance

We will enter the home from the back door. If we peek through the large windows, we have our first glimpse of the total open-plan layout and furnishings. From this angle, we can see how the various zones are created with pools of light. This type of subtle lighting has the power to separate living areas without building walls or otherwise imposing on the open feel.

Warm, muted tones

The sophisticated living room has a very plush feel. The colour palette is restrained and limited to mute, soft beiges and creamy whites. At the same time, the furnishings are generously proportioned and the finishes are luxurious. But the most powerful contributor to this effect is the lighting. Dimmable lights are recessed in the ceiling and on-the-wall features. The ceiling light has been partially obscured so as to block direct light and bounce it on the ceiling, creating a very soft effect.

Extended kitchen dining

The horizontal focus is clear in the design of the kitchen. A long and narrow ceiling skylight allows lots of light to flood the working areas. At the same time, the handle-less cupboard doors and minimalist design create a very straightforward and unified design. It can be a little hard to integrate kitchen dining into this sort of layout. So it's interesting to see how the large kitchen island has been extended to accommodate a large breakfast bench.

Stunning garden view

From the other side of the kitchen, we have a great view of the lush green garden and its relationship to the open-plan living space. The restrained palette and bare walls serve to highlight the stunning greenery outside. Nature provides the decoration, and furnishings provide a subtle, calming place to relax. Finally, note the very subtle variations in the materials used here. Timber kitchen cupboards, a stone floor and a wooden wall all create a very gentle connection with the outdoors.

Stone feature wall and oval bathtub

The plush simple bathroom offers the best of the elements we have explored today. The free-standing white bathtub sits adjacent to a lovely feature stone wall. This is illuminated by a skylight that is just hidden out of sight. Finally, note the combination of recessed LED lights and feature lights on offer here. This is a bathroom for simple, luxurious living.
