Europe is replete with rustic beauty. Particularly among the Romance cultures, many buildings that date back several hundred years or more are still inhabited today. Naturally, this fact alone gives these places a sense of cultural richness and romance that’s unparalleled anywhere else. Yet, that certainly doesn’t mean that these structures don’t require periodic renovation and restoration. In fact, this kind of work is quite common for design teams and architects working in Europe.

Today we will be exploring how designers of today reformulate these aged gems in such a way that they maintain their essence whilst still remaining functional to new inhabitants. Our tour takes us to Barcelona, where we will be traversing a wonderfully rustic Mediterranean country home by the renowned Deu i Deu architectural firm that has been refurbished with all the comforts of modern life. We hope you’ll join us!

Easy breezy living room

The living room is a perfect example of the way the contemporary seamlessly blends with the rustic, farmhouse elements of the home. Specifically, the clay walls and exposed wooden beams are undeniable markers of this home’s past, while the flat screen television fits perfectly into the build-in shelves and the furniture is effortlessly contemporary in style.

Meanwhile, the living room opens out to an expansive property with a lovely view of the surrounding countryside. What a nice spot that patio must be for sunbathing on a warm summer day!

Cosy dining space

As we move through the main living area of the home, we come upon this homey little dining setup. The dining room table is simple and contemporary. It looks much like a larger version of the coffee table situated in front of the sofa in the living room.

The space maintains its rusticity, however, due to the woven wicker chairs and the place mats made of sea reeds.

Finding balance in transitional spaces

We love the textured effect of the wall in the hallway leading upstairs. While the wall itself is made in accordance with standard contemporary techniques, it still fits nicely within the antiquity of the original structure. The décor here is simple, and mainly consists of local varieties of plants in Mediterranean style pots.

From this angle we can also see the kitchen, which is altogether more modern in style than the rest of the home. This was a wise choice on the part of the design team because modern kitchens are typically more functional, and the style brings balance to the aesthetic of the home overall.

Unapologetically Mediterranean bedroom

The bedroom may just take the cake in terms of its country style Mediterranean appeal. This is largely due to the wonderfully maintained walls of natural stone. Of course, the exposed wooden beams that span across the ceiling do their part in creating that rugged, romantic ambience as well.

The furnishings here are quite modern, which helps to bring this stunning room into the 21st century. We love the use of sparkling textiles here as they put a more glamorous twist on Mediterranean style.

En suite continuity

Off the bedroom is an en suite with similar decorative characteristics. The ultra-rustic stonewall is paired with luxurious, modern décor, including a sophisticated rectangular washbasin.

The bespoke shelf fits perfectly into the room and offers ample space for storing linens and other toiletries. The mirror helps to spread more natural light throughout the space, thus making it appear more expansive.
